Hills of the North
Hills of the North
NGC 7000, the North America Nebula, is an emission nebula located in the constellation Cygnus. Its distinctive shape resembles the continent of North America, giving it its name. The nebula is a site of active star formation, with young, massive stars illuminating the surrounding gas clouds. NGC 7000 is approximately 1,600 light-years away from Earth and spans about 100 light-years across. Studying this nebula provides valuable insights into the processes of star birth and the effects of massive stars on their surrounding environment.
This photograph shows a zoomed-in view of a particular region of the North America Nebula. It showcases hilly structures and streaks of ionized Hydrogen and Sulphur gasses awashed in the blue glow of ionized Oxygen. Located nearby are the LBN 384 and LBN 385 dark nebulae, which are vast regions of interstellar dust and gas that obstruct the light from background stars, causing them to appear as dark patches of gasses.
