The Horsehead Nebula in the constellation Orion has captured the public's attention like few other celestial objects, and remains one of the most popular Astrophotography targets among astronomers.

Also known as Barnard 33, The Horsehead Nebula and its companion, the Flame Nebula, sit near the star Alnitak in Orion's Belt. It is a dark, light-gobbling nebula made of cold gas and dust, which is only visible because its silhouette obscures the light from the brighter nebula behind it.

This image is a two-panel mosaic of the Horsehead and Flame nebulae, shot from dark-ish Bortle 4 skies in Indian Wells, California.

• Calibration: 40 dark, flat, dark-flat frames
• Stacking: Astro Pixel Processor
• Editing: Photoshop, Starnet++
• Total Exposure: 1.5 hours for each panel
